The International Mother Language

Date:
The International Mother Language

The International Mother Language Day is held every year on the 21st Feb to promote preserving and protecting all the languages spoken by human beings. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1991, and the UN's general assembly approved it in 2000. Since then, the awareness of the native "mother" language's significance with cultural identity and social harmony has been increasing

International mother language day recognises that mother language education should be a priority from early childhood years. Also, it recognises that multilingualism which refers to a person who can speak multi-languages including his mother language, at the same fluency level, can actually assist in developing a sense of harmony, diversity and acceptance of others within society.

In this day, the UN and UNESCO particularly focus on the importance of one's mother language in developing intellectually, emotionally and socially. The mother language is actually the language of emotions where we can express our true selves.

Plus, most human nations see their true pride and proud in the language they speak. Since early times, people used to include words in everything they did. For example, an art wall where drawings were the theme of it would include descriptions written in their language.

The passion for mother languages developed calligraphy, the art of producing creative decorative lettering or handwritten. To date, calligraphy has a great role in fashion and jewellery.

This use of calligraphy in jewellery is clear in Arabic traditional jewellery, where Arabic letters decorate fine jewellery. Traditional necklaces would have famous quotes or sometimes verses of the holy book "Quran". Sultan's official rings included their signature crafted in Arabic letters.

To date, the love and admiration of Arabic letters drive jewellery designs to include them in their modern bracelets, necklaces or rings design. For example, a ring may have the wearer's name printed on it or a bracelet with engraved names. Likewise, a famous poem or quote might be a decoration for a gold necklace.

A perfect gift would be gold earrings with initial letters or a statement that shows the special occasion, such as birthday greetings or anniversary.

On international mother language day, let us celebrate our love for our mother language, and our identity, by showing off the lovely Arabic quotes in a fine piece of gold jewellery.
