International Day of Women & Girls in STEM

International Day of Women & Girls in STEM

Today the world celebrates Women and Girls in Science Day. It is a great occasion to point out the remarkable role women play in life. The official start of this day goes back to 2015 when the UN decided to assign a day to emphasize the importance of women & girls' roles in STEM "Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields".

The reason behind this day is the fact that women with bachelor's degrees in these fields are fewer than men. Since these fields are vital in our current life and will continue to be so, many working opportunities with good pay are available and more compared to other fields. Thus, encouraging women and paving the paths for them to study and participate in these fields will mean more job opportunities and better financial incomes.

Many recognizable women figures throughout history contributed significantly in various life fields. Gold mining and the gold jewellery industry are among them. Many engineers studied the best way to develop artisan mining and protect women's rights in gold mining, such as the Indonesian PhD holder Dr Baiq.

The development, diversity, and enhancement of gold jewellery are a result of women's impact. The change in women's tastes, needs, and likes evokes changes in jewellery trends. This encourages designers and jewellers to be in constant development to enhance their creativity and designing skills.

Women's effect in jewellery goes way more than simply inspiration. Many women took larger steps in their passion for jewellery and gold and started jewellery design as a profession. Their designs are unique and remarkable because when women design a piece of jewellery, she thinks about what women like and how they prefer to look. A woman designer has the mind of the jewellery consumer, woman, and the creativity of an artist. Therefore, the results are always unparallel.

At Al Romaizan, we always support women designers, and we have cooperated with many talented young Emirati designers. They receive support in production, marketing, and selling their designs. Most of their designs are re-shaping the traditional Emirati jewellery to suit trends nowadays. For example, many young Emirati women designers use different gemstones for al-shawahid, the traditional gold rings, or use birthstones for pendants, or traditional earrings. These small touches transfer traditional jewellery into a stylish "one of a kind" piece of jewellery.
