Jewellery Cleaning Tips

It's possible to not notice the fact that your jewellery requires cleaning, either because you wear it often and don't notice the changes or because it's hidden away, and you don't see it often. Realizing how dirty some of your favourite jewellery pieces are, could make you feel a little frightened. The good news is that jewellery can be cleaned easily at home. To learn how; keep reading.

1. Give It A Wash

This is the easiest cleaning process to complete, but almost all jewellery should benefit from it. For many pieces, especially fashion or solid gold jewellery, you could find that's all you need to do.

Use soft, colourless, fragrance-free soap to wash your jewellery in warm water. The best options are Castile soap, woollens soap, or even mild hand soap without moisturizers, antiseptics, or harsh chemicals.

To help remove dirt from crevices, use a cloth or soft-bristled brush. Keep in mind that soaking fragile stones like opals or pearls in water for an extended period of time could harm them. When it's clean, be sure to rinse it off and dry it fast and thoroughly. You can also wash your necklace in warm, soapy water, followed by a rinse, if it has silk thread.

To dry, the silk should be straight and laid out flat or hung up. If not, use a steam setting on an iron to straighten it.

2. Use an Ultrasonic Cleaner

If dirt and dust are difficult to remove from intricate components, consider purchasing a cheap ultrasonic cleaner and following the instructions. It will be quite effective at removing dirt and debris, even from spots that would normally be inaccessible. Although an ultrasonic cleaner won't remove tarnish, it will perform wonders on intricate pieces that have many nooks where dirt can collect and stick.

However, don't use ultrasonic cleaning if your silver jewellery includes soft gemstones like opals, lapis lazuli, turquoise, or pearls or has parts that have become blackened or patinated as part of the design. Use this method cautiously as it can harm some finishes and sensitive gemstones.

3. Use a Polishing Cloth to Remove Tarnish

Over time, precious metals, including gold with lower karat weights, and sterling silver, can all tarnish. This is a typical metal process, and cleaning the tarnish from valuable metals is not too difficult.

Use a precious metal jewellery cleaning cloth, to remove tarnish from your precious metal jewellery. Once you're satisfied, rinse your jewellery and dry it gently to remove any chemical lingering.

4. You Can Also Use Silver Dip instead

Silver dip can also be used to swiftly and simply remove tarnish from sterling silver. Silver chains, which can be challenging to clean with a polishing cloth alone, respond particularly well to it.

At your neighbourhood grocery store, bigger pharmacy, or hardware store, you should be able to find a silver dip or something comparable. Alternately, try a nearby jewellery store. Remember to follow the instructions carefully, and rinse well after use.

5. Avoid Harsh Cleaning

Never use toothpaste or baking soda paste applied to the metal as jewellery cleaning methods. Every time you use these techniques, a small quantity of metal will be removed, damaging and depleting your priceless jewellery over time. This method of cleaning is specifically harmful to jewellery made of gold vermeil, gold filled, or gold plating. A polishing cloth, brush, or any other item that is rubbed against the metal should also be used with caution, especially if your jewellery has a more fragile finish like gold plating, blackening, or a patina.

6. Store Your Jewellery Carefully

Consider the best way to store your jewellery now that it is fresh and clean to prevent having to clean it too frequently.

Precious metal jewellery should not be kept in a humid environment, especially in the toilet, since this may accelerate tarnishing. If you live in a humid area, it is necessary always to take extra precautions and clean more frequently. Bear in mind that precious metal jewellery should ideally be kept out of the way of airflow; it will help keep dust away and slow tarnish. If you can, keep it in a purse, tiny jewellery box, or something similar.

Moreover, keep an eye on your jewellery if you enjoy wearing it on display because it can require cleaning more frequently.

Another crucial consideration is that metal will get damaged when it rubs against other metals, tougher gemstones, or other hard surfaces. Make sure to store your precious metal jewellery separately and to prevent beads or chains from rubbing against pendants in order to prevent scratches.
