Mothers' Day

Date:
Mothers' Day

Mothers' Day is one of the most popular celebrated days in the world, despite its different dates in different countries. Most of the mothers' days are in March or May, and they all share the idea to appreciate mothers and support their work.

It is not a new day, as many may think. In fact, this Day is as old as the Greeks and Romans. Both civilizations had Mothers' Day to celebrate the goddess Rhea and Cybele. Then when Christianity spread in Europe, the "Mothering Sunday" started to take place.

Nowadays, the UK celebrates Mothers' Day in the Mothering Sunday Festival, but with less religious meaning, if almost no religious meaning at all. It occurs on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The modern version of Mothers' Day was officially considered a holiday in 1908 in the US, in West Virginia. The purpose of this Day in the US dates back to the civil war times in the 19th century when Ann Jarvis contributed to establishing mothers' clubs to help them look after their children in a divided city. After her death, Anna Jarvis, her daughter, continued what her mother started, and as a result, the US mother's Day was created. It is a day to honour the sacrifices mothers make.

In the Arab world, though, the first time mothers' Day was recognized in Egypt was in the 1940s by the journalist Mustafa Amin who reasserted the pharaonic celebration for motherhood in March. Ancient Egyptians honoured women in general and mothers in particular, and they had special festivals in spring honouring motherhood. They picked 21st Mar to be mothers' Day because it is the start of spring where flowers blossom and the earth regain all its colourful scenes.

After Egypt, the rest of the countries in the Arab world followed this idea, and 21st March became official mothers’ day, where all Arab mothers would be covered with flowers and gifts.
Regardless of where and when mothers' Day is, the idea is the same to honour mothers and motherhood. There are different ways to celebrate it and show gratitude to mothers, but gifts are the answer mainly everywhere.
