The Rock

The second week of May captured the attention of jewellery & diamond lovers with the Christie auction that took place. The auction had the largest white diamond in the world under the hammer on Wednesday 11th May.

The public attention was brought by the news of its predicted price, and it was believed to hit a new record after the previously auctioned white diamond of 163.41 Carat.

 This largest white diamond that is known as the “Rock” was mined in Africa, South Africa, around 20 years ago. The large white diamond weighs, to be precise, more than 228.31 carats.

The Rock is a pear-shaped white diamond of 228.31 Carats, the size of a golf ball. Its perfect pear shape & the fact of being the largest diamond to be auctioned are the reasons for placing it in the trends for weeks. The Rock was worn as a Cartier necklace by its former second owner.

On 26th Mar 2022, Christie's Auction House in Dubai displayed the giant diamond for the first time to the public before the Rock started its tour to Taipei, New York reaching its last destination Geneva, Switzerland. The diamond was displayed in Christie Auction House in Dubai for three days.

They have chosen Dubai and the Middle East region to display the diamond because they know the great appreciation of stones, gold and jewellery people of this area have. They believed it would be a great opportunity to display the unique diamond in the land of luxurious product clients.

Pre its sales, the head of Christie auction House, Max Faucet, described this white diamond as a unique diamond that is expected to hit a high selling figure forming a new record. He believed it is unique because of its perfectly symmetrical pear shape, and that is rare to find on large diamonds where the shape is usually being compromised to keep the weight.

Despite all the high expectations of selling this diamond at a high price, the estimated price was 30.000$, and the Rock was sold for 21.9 million $ falling short of all expectations.
