Arafat Day and Traditional Gold

Arafat Day! The name defines the humble and sacred Day of Arafah. This Islamic holiday falls on the 9th day of Dhu al-Hijjah of the lunar Islamic Calendar. It is rightly considered the most important day of Hajj, the must-sacred visit to Allah's home in Makkah, obligatory for financially stable people. To be precise, it is on the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage and the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.

Pilgrims leave Minah just after dawn to go to a hill and plain called Mount Arafat and the Plain of Arafat. Hence, the name Arafat Day. The pilgrims spend the entire day around Mount Arafat, also known as 'the Mount of Mercy (Jabal ar-Rahmah),' asking Allah for forgiveness.

Importance of Arafat Day

The Day of Arafah (Arafat) is one of the most important days for Muslims. Hajj is incomplete without this great visit and day of contemplation.

1.     Allah (SWT) has referred to this day in Surah al-Maidah of the Holy Quran in these valuable words:

"Today, I have perfected your faith for you, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam as your way."

(Quran Surah al Maa’idah 5:3)

2.     According to Islamic tradition, the hill of Arafat is where the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stood and delivered the Farewell Sermon to the Muslims who had accompanied him for the Hajj towards the end of his life.

3.     The day of Arafah is so significant that Allah (SWT) particularly swore by it in the Holy Quran, in Surah al Burooj exactly. Allah swears by only something great and mighty, so the Day of Arafah is enormously significant:

"By the sky containing great stars. And [by] the promised Day. And [by] the witness and what is witnessed" (85: 1-3)

Things to Do on Arafah Day

1.     Fasting on the Day of Arafah

The Day of Arafah fasting is highly recommended for Muslims not going on Hajj. Even the Prophet (PBUH) 's Sunnah mentioned it when He was asked about fasting on the day of Arafah:

"Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year." (Muslim)

2.     Du'aa of Arafah

Du'aa of Arafah is a must-do thing and is an excellent dua. Pilgrims should say this dua for the day of Arafah as stated by The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him:

La ilaha ‘illa Allaahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shayin qadeer

"There is nothing that deserves to be worshiped in truth except Allah, He is Alone and has no partner, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is All-Powerful over all things.'" (Muwatta)

3.      Making Tahleel, Takbeer, Tahmeed and Tasbeeh

Pilgrims must follow the Sunnah of The Prophet (PBUH) to recite the Tahleel, Takbeer, and Tahmeed as many times as possible on the day of Arafah. This zikr or recitation is advised for the days of Tashreeq, which are the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah.

Ø  Tahleel means to recite "Laa ilaaha il-lal-laah"

Ø  Takbeer is to say, "Allahu Akbar,"

Ø  Tahmeed is to recite, "Alhamdulillaah,"

Ø  Tasbeeh stands for saying, "Subhanallaah,"

4.     Seek forgiveness from Almighty Allah

Arafat Day brings a golden opportunity for pilgrims from all around the globe to seek forgiveness from the One God, Allah Almighty.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

"There is no day on which Allah frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of 'Arafah" (Muslim)

5.     Consider donating to a charity

Pilgrims are recommended to give money to charity and actively go out of their way to help others on the Day of Arafah. It can be provided in the form of Islamic Sadqa and Khairat. You can't discount the importance of giving charity on Arafat Day and during Hajj as it is considered a vital kind of worship to Allah (SWT). God's men give to the poor to give freely in the way of God.
